Or better yet, show me a picture shooting that had out of a Canon against a huge roach in a data center.

        … Like, a Canon printer/photocopier?

So its just projectile vomiting generated images of the scene you likely intended to describe?

Just gimme the controllers (I want the Frame controllers as well) and I’ll be happy.

Controllers but not the Frame itself? I want a modern VR headset that runs without a tether and ISN’T produced by an evil cloud/social-media company

Yeah, that as well. But that will probably be over my budget.

I don’t think you can do a whole lot with the Frame controllers without the Frame though.

As far as I recall they did say that you can use them with the Steam Machine.

I just want a good controller where the hands aren’t forced to be together. The Switch ones are too small for me.

Wouldn’t the controller just work with Steam on their own? I imagine they might not work on a console, but they should work with Steam.

I would love to buy the Frame, but I really hope the controllers will be available soon.

Seriously this. Fuck everything else; I already have a PC and a VR headset. I just want the controller. Badly. I’ve been waiting since Christmas! (when I got a Steam gift card.)

    • InvalidName2@lemmy.zip ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

I just want the controllers as well. I’ve put off replacing my PS4 Pro controller that’s getting harder and harder to charge and doesn’t hold a charge very long any more. It’s getting to the point where I’m going to have to buy something, anything, because this thing is going to give up entirely before long. I was hoping the Steam controller would launch early this year even if the other hardware wasn’t ready. But looking like I’m going to miss out entirely if I’m forced to buy something else due to imminent hardware failure.

they’re trying to beat the age verification laws to market because they know afterwards will be a shit show.

they know customers won’t be spending money on hardware that is ID nerfed.

if valve gets the hardware to market now, along with the software it’s more likely that people will buy the hardware later and flash older firmware later that doesn’t require ID verification.

    source
    • thingsiplay@lemmy.ml ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

What “ID nerfed”? The laws are not about ID verification, so I am not sure what you are talking about.

multiple states and now countries have bills and/or laws that will be enforced soon that require the age and/or identity of the user. you’re lying to yourself if you believe steam won’t be directly impacted by that and will be forced to comply.

What good will be the release if it’s unbearably expensive?

    source
    • Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Not a lot of good options at this point:

      1. Wait for RAM to come back down to hit a more competitive price point. Could take years, during which the hardware performance is aging and losing competitive edge.

      2. Release this year at a higher price point, and risk the price killing adoption rates, potentially dooming the hardware.

At least with option #2 we will get the steam controller sooner, since it’s price probably won’t be negatively impacted by RAM.

      source
      • Lemmchen@feddit.org ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

If I was Valve, at this point I’d probably scrap the project and develop a new console with a planned release in late 2027 or so. Hopefully the prices will get back to normal until then and they could use actually good hardware instead of relying on a 8GB FSR3 GPU.

Reviewers have already stated their fear that it might be dead on arrival when the price is not as competitively set as the Steam Deck’s and this was long before the RAM price increases. So I don’t really see a chance for a successful product launch in the current market.

Oh come on, they could just open up preorders and trickle them out. Charge a bit more at first to cover the cost while promising to lower the price as RAM gets cheaper.

    I want my Frame :(

Price has already stabilized and even had some dips. My 2x32 GB 6000 CL30 kit that I bought for 200€ early 2025 spiked to 900€. But now it costs 800€ and in the last weeks it was even possible to get it for 609€ when price dipped.

Don’t forget that the Chinese are entering the DDR5 market, it will take a year or two, but more supply is coming.

When the AI bubble pops (which can still take a while) the memory price will also plummet. The main reason price is up is the memory companies being careful this time around. Last time they built factories and raised supply, only to get burned. Now they are hedging their bets instead of expanding.

How to pre-order, if Valve even does not know what price the machine will end up? At the time of sending the machines, the price could go up for Valve very high and people have pre-ordered for wrong price. That means everyone who pre-ordered would get a price hike and in general a bad publicity. Pre-ordering anything is a bad thing if you don’t know the end product well. And combine it at these high prices in uncertainty times like these…

Valve should not make any promises or pre-orders right now. It would be the wrong thing to do.

      source
      • Vlyn@lemmy.zip ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

They must already have stock in their warehouse, so they can just set the right price.

And for the next batch they set the price again.

So I meant less pre-order and more let people order in batches with adjusted price.

I’m a bit surprised that the Steam Controller might end up released later too. It does not have a builtin memory (or maybe to save settings?) and is not that expensive and big, therefore easier to produce and send in mass. Also releasing it early might also free up some production space and work for later when the Machine and Frame are released.

    • Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

They’re probably going to have an option to buy it bundled with the Steam Machine for a discount, if the release it early then people who buy it as a stand-alone would feel like they missed out on that deal.

      • ouRKaoS@lemmy.today ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

I think the bigger issue would still be supply. If they sell out of controllers from people buying them for their Deck/PC, they may not have enough for the Machines, delaying them further.

Which is not an issue I think and definitely not a reason not to release the controller potentially months ahead.

One vague rumor suggested the memory pricing hill might be leveling off; sadly Valve might be paying upfront for it still, but at least it won’t get worse.

      One vague rumor suggested

No source? Who is that person? So nobody needs to listen to it. It’s a rumor, vague, from a single source and just a suggestion (sounds like an opinion rather than deep analysis). My point is, nobody knows and nobody can make predictions what will happen. Everyone has their opinion.

…I mean, yes, which is why I lead with those 4 words. I’m hoping nobody is making critical stock bets based on Lemmy comments. It’s more of a “nice possibility” to make us hopeful we can buy PCs sometime.

If they sell it BYO RAM, I can swap the RAM from my other PC into this when I want to play. That’s the new video game meta: swapping RAM between computers because it’s too expensive to have dedicated RAM.

  • mlg@lemmy.world ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

I think they’re just pooling stock because the RAM prices are already screwed.

AYN already announced that their supplier is bumping prices, so their console prices are definitely gonna increase by the next batch.

The bubble will eventually pop, it just won’t be rapid or soon enough to halt product sales and wait it out.

Which sucks because a year ago, the GabeCube would have sold at a seriously competitive price to the point where it would have legitimately challenged Xbox as the superior product, despite much lower unit count.
