Ad blockers work fine, what do you mean? Youtube lost, their next big idea wont even try kicking in until next year.
yukichigai@kbin.social 1 year ago
As others have said, adblockers do still work on YouTube. Specifically, uBlock Origin works great on YouTube, as long as you don't use it with any other adblockers.
Also if you're using Chrome, stop using Chrome. uBlock Origin still works on Chrome most of the time but Google is doing their best to kill it off. Switch to Firefox.
Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca 1 year ago
You don’t.
You’ll take whatever cock daddy capitalism shoves down your throat and you’ll damn well like it.
Or use an adblocker.
CowsLookLikeMaps@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
Soooooo I’m liking option B).
lurch@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
Capitalism is supposed to give consumers choice. It could help if consumers used a greater variety of video sites, eg. Dailymotion or that weird chinese thing BiliBili. If they keep focusing on Youtube, despite all that bullshit, they are basically begging for more bullshit.
eltrain123@lemmy.world 1 year ago
You have a choice. Use their service with the shitty ads or find something else to do.
It sucks, but that’s what you’ve hot.
Buffalox@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Capitalism is supposed to give consumers choice.
Nah that’s just propaganda, capitalism is supposed to be efficient and make profits.
User choice comes ONLY from regulation preventing monopolies from dishonest practices.

There is also the app FreeTube for desktops as well.
And Newpipe + Sponsor Block for phones. Downside is there are no playlists. Upside no ads or sponsor nonsense and you can download.
atlasraven31@lemm.ee 1 year ago
You can create playlists on NewPipe

Because everybody else is rather unhelpful (JusT USe AdBlOck, DOn’t USE yoUToUBe), try this it you can’t get adblockers to work:
For specific ads, look at the ad information below the video. There should be three vertical dots you can click, which will open a menu. From there you can report inappropriate ads or tell Youtube you’re not interested in those.
Customising ad topics and brands on your Google account can help get broader strokes of ad topics out of your ads. You can customise (up to a certain extent) what kind of ads Google will show you. You’ll still get ads based on the video subject, but it can help to remove specific entries.
If you’re on Chrome, you can try going to the new ad settings in your browser and see if there are specific topics you can disable from there. Google’s latest change to the ad ecosystem was making the interest tracking happen locally. There’s a good chance you have it disabled, though.
Adblock does still work for Youtube, as long as you don’t stack ad blockers like they’re layers on a sandwich. Blocking ads has become more involved, though, now only a few ad blockers will work and they won’t work in Chrome in a few months. Don’t do the crap reddit tells you (adding custom rules, changing settings willy-nilly), just run uBlock Origin at default settings.
On mobile, Revanced works pretty well. It takes some effort to set up right, but once you’ve got it running you won’t need to bother looking after it for a few months. I’m not sure if there’s an iOS alternative.

Reporting the ad does not make it disappear. I still get that fucking epoch times trans-hate ad all the time.
I’ve reported it about a dozen times so far.
skullgiver@popplesburger.hilciferous.nl 1 year ago
Interesting, last time I reported an ad, it just disappeared.
In that case, adblockers or paying for Premium are the only solutions I can think of.
pewgar_seemsimandroid@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 year ago
unlock orgin is one of the best Adblockers and there’s revanced, newpipe sponsorock and YouTube frontends
monsterpiece42@reddthat.com 1 year ago
Sorry to nitpick, but it’s Ublock Origin. I know autocorrect hates “ublock”

- Tap and hold on the YouTube app icon
- Press "Delete"
- Confirm any following prompts
KingJalopy@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Worked perfectly! Thanks!
centof@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Here’s a creative way to do it.
- Print out the downvote symbol and a screenshot of the ad.
- Dip the paper in dog shit to emphasize that the ad is a shitpost.
- Send it to 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway Mountain View, CA 94043.
- ???
- Profit.

When the ad is playing you may see Sponsored X:XX and a little i in a circle in the lower left corner. Click the i. This will give you the ability to block or report the ad as appropriate. It will also show you what category has been associated to you as to why you received the ad, you can say if you want more or less ads of that category.
The iOS mobile app has a bug currently where you need to quit the app and come back after doing this, but it does block the ad and you won’t see that particular cut of the ad again. Unfortunately unless it’s a mid-video ad, or from a channel you’re subscribed to you will lose the video you’re watching as it hasn’t made it into your play history yet. But if the ad was mid-video your video can be resumed via history. For clarity, the video still exists, it’s just hit or miss if the video will be in the curated randomness they present you for you to try starting the video again.
KingJalopy@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Just use newpipe or something similar. I haven’t used the actual YouTube app in years there’s literally no reason to
nix@merv.news 1 year ago
Its not possible to “downvote” ads but you can still block them by using ublock origin on firefox
Ziggurat@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
Knocking on wood, but at the moment ublock origin+ firefox still do the trick ? Well get the warning twice sine they start fighting adblocker, so it may change at some point.
But indeed, I should use youtube less, I pay for spotify, but sometimes use as a source for music, I tend to then fall on clickbaits video especially when cooking.
zacher_glachl@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I wouldn’t know, haven’t seen an ad on youtube in like 10 years.
Nanomerce@lemmy.world 1 year ago
the ad center in your account would be where you would tweak what kind of ads you get.
mhague@lemmy.world 1 year ago
You can affect the ads by finding normal ads around the internet (served by Google) and telling Google what is and isn’t relevant to you.
However, Google seems to allow advertisers to lie and game their system. Ie PragerU will advertise some “trans is bad” “children’s book” schlock, labeled as “video games.”
When you’re already sucking it up and trying to fairly engage with Google, it’s disheartening to see they don’t even pay attention to what they serve people.
echo64@lemmy.world 1 year ago
So this comment kind of misunderstands how the Google ad system works for youtube.
When you click on a video, Google presents you, and the video you are watching (with categories associated with you and the video) to an auction. Advertisers then bid on your view, and whoever has the highest bid wins, you see their ad. This is all automated and happens in the blink of an eye, but that’s the basic system.
This means that parties that want to show ads to you will get to, no matter your preferences.
mhague@lemmy.world 1 year ago
This is for the interstitials right? It’s a separate system than the ones on the side?

adblocks works source: me using firefox and ublock origin, i only got the “we detect you are using adblock” message two times, and it was a month ago(also revanced on android)
CaptObvious@literature.cafe 1 year ago
Short answer: you can’t
Slightly longer answer: report it as offensive, dangerous, or porn
Kolanaki@yiffit.net 1 year ago
There is usually a little circled i somewhere on the ad you click and select “this ad is not relevant to me.”
It won’t actually do anything, though.
yournamehere@lemm.ee 1 year ago
or we could just stop using services and products made by american run corpos.

koff koff
if your account is banned for adblocker (like one of mine) make new a account and it still works. (firefox, not sure about others)
pain in the ass to resub, but better than watching ads on the channels i have not whitelisted.
atocci@kbin.social 1 year ago
How do you get your account banned for adblock?
UncleBadTouch@lemmy.ca 1 year ago
aparently i cannot upload a pic in the reply, might be a lemmy issue, might be me, i have been puffin lots today lol
but yeah, i get the ‘violates tos’ warning on every video, no matter the video. yet i swap over to my birds youtube and no issues at all. i dont even have to leave the page of that video, literally just swap accounts. I can still upload content to that account, but i cant even view my own videos while on that account.
Id be happy to screen record, post it to my birds youtube and show you what i mean.
