That’s two of the reasons why drug testing is bullshit:
A) Alcohol isn’t considered a part of it and you can fail a drug test if you had weed a week ago but pass if you got drunk before pissing in the cup.
and
B) If you can do your job efficiently, who cares what substances you take? If someone shows up to work drunk or high and can’t do their job, by all means, fire them. But so many people do their work just fine drunk or high.

flying squid, you’re advocating like you partake
wanna hit off the j?
MxM111@kbin.social 1 year ago
But not alcoholic stoners!
Melkath@kbin.social 1 year ago
Has that been the secret all along?
Surp@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Weed is totally safer but not free from fault either.
Rediphile@lemmy.ca 1 year ago
Yes, sort of like gummy bears versus fentanyl.
Kage520@lemmy.world 1 year ago
We talking regular gummy bears or sugar free haribo?
cheese_greater@lemmy.world 1 year ago
U know a good article to read that is balanced and addresses all sides of this conjecture?

Struck a chord?
Lord_ToRA@lemmy.world 1 year ago
People die from alcohol abuse. A lot of people. It’s not fair to compare it. It really hurts.
corrupts_absolutely@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
pretty sure either are safer than employment
Sylvartas@lemmy.world 1 year ago
What does being employed have to do with anything here ?
Leecheslandlords can be alcoholics/stoners, high functioning alcoholics are a thing, and I know a shit ton of people who can do their job perfectly fine while stonedcosmicrookie@lemmy.world 1 year ago
When your quality depends on wether you are a paid slave or not. I like the subtle capitalism
To be fair some of the drunks/stoners I’ve met have been better people than the ones who have a job.
ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Lotta people in here have no idea how weed works lmfao

Tbf I smoked the devil’s lettuce once, and now I’m commenting in a shitposting forum, so I guess it really does have negative effects
Angry_Maple@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
I smoked exactly one cannabis two years ago. My doctor told me that I probably won’t make it to be 200 years old.
So, there you have it. If you consume even one of satan’s cabbages, you will die eventually.

I’m a fully functional stoner (full stack dev) living in a tropical country full of drinkers. It’s not the same. I can’t imagine functioning on alcohol and honestly never saw anyone succeed though there are a lot of successful stoners here. It’s a different drug though cannabis definitely will impact your performance and motivation so you have to plan accordingly.
CADmonkey@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I’m a mechanical draftsman. The parts I model keep huge installations, that society depends on, functioning. And a few times a week, I get nice and high with the wife. I’ve known entirely too many functional stoners, it’s so common that I would almost say everyone knows one somewhere.

While you are employed as… “Beach”?

Yes, I was there.
People always look weird at me for talking to myself.
FunkyMonk@kbin.social 1 year ago
Drunk I think maybe I can drive, stoned I know I don't want to drive. So safer for others maybe?
Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 1 year ago
I’ve seen a ton of people argue that it’s fine to drive after smoking and how it doesn’t affect it. With alcohol everyone knowns it makes you a worse driver, with weed you sometimes get people who say it makes them better.
Rootiest@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Seen plenty of people try to make that same claim about alcohol.
Also I think the reduced inhibitions often causes people to become overconfident in their ability to drive safely.
havokdj@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I’ve had to drive while under the influence of marijuana a couple of times and can say that is bullshit lmao.
If you smoked a little, you’ll probably be fine just like if you drank a beer or two. Smoke a lot though and you are going to get distracted easily, spaced out, etc. Anything other than totally sober will make you a worse driver unless it’s something like amphetamine
ichmagrum@feddit.de 1 year ago
Biggest danger from weed is secondhand smoke. A drunk might crash into you with their car and then beat you up for being in the way.
problematicPanther@lemmy.world 1 year ago
a stoner might get hungry, eat too much taco bell and destroy your toilet a few hours later though.
MargotRobbie@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Barbie memes, yay!
abbotsbury@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Also hate seeing the stoner talk about how much safer blazed driving is than drunk driving.
mudstickmcgee@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
They are on a technicality that they tend to drive slower. but I’d hope everyone agrees that driving under the influence of anything, even sleep deprivation is unnecessarily dangerous
schmidtster@lemmy.world 1 year ago
It’s not as safe as driving sober, but driving drunk is far worse for your capacity than being high.
zuch0698o@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Wtf is this entitled bullshit?
pozbo@lemmy.world 1 year ago
God forbid you try drugs and suffer the worst fate imaginable; unemployment. Lol get some perspective ffs.
Saltblue@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I was high everyday for 3 months approx, memory got worse, hunger suppression and actually lost weight, stopped like a month ago, no side effects, felt a little weird being sober, I think I actually like weed less now. But I know that if I did the same with alcohol I would be dead.
PRUSSIA_x86@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Have the memory and appetite problems gotten better?
Saltblue@lemmy.world 1 year ago
In two days they were gone.
Asifall@lemmy.world 1 year ago
But why? I feel like after being high for like 4 hours it starts to lose its appeal.
Enzy@lemm.ee 1 year ago
How’s your lungs
smooth_tea@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Weed smokers are less likely to get lung cancer than non smokers, they have a bigger lung capacity and it acts like a bronchodilator, making it (the substance, not the smoking part) an effective medicine in patients with asthma. People who’ve used marijuana and develop COPD also have a lower mortality rate, and it is beneficial when it comes to corona as well. But yes, smoke is still bad for you.
Saltblue@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Fine as far as I know, they got a bit irritated in the end, that is one of the reasons I stopped.
devbo@lemmy.world 1 year ago
the stoner is probably the happiest out of all three.
EvilEyedPanda@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I’m an alcoholic stoner who works full time, so I’m inclined to agree!

Marijuana may be bad for your heart
ucsf.edu/…/marijuana-and-e-cigs-can-harm-heart-tr…
Belgdore@lemm.ee 1 year ago
“May be” is the point.
From the Forbes article you cite:
“KEY QUOTE
‘It’s important to emphasize that these findings are observational, and they provide insights into patterns within our dataset. However, they do not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship,’ lead author Dr. Anees Bahji, at the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine, told Forbes.”
Drinking anything other than water, breathing anything other than air, and eating just about anything have been shown in some study somewhere to be harmful in someway.
phoneymouse@lemmy.world 1 year ago
There are multiple studies beyond the Forbes article.
I do have a close friend that has used heavily cannabis for years and she has been treated for heart issues recently. She’s still young… too young for heart issues. I can see the link.
dangblingus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 year ago
Nowhere near as bad for your heart as alcohol.
phoneymouse@lemmy.world 1 year ago
You can provide evidence of that if you have a study, otherwise I think we can’t really say that with certainty.
Franzia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 year ago
This is great news because alcohol is bad for like everything.
mojo@lemm.ee 1 year ago
It is true tho
RubberElectrons@lemmy.world 1 year ago
No, I still think bud is safer.
DragonTypeWyvern@literature.cafe 1 year ago
Health wise?
Depends. If you’re an edibles fan you’re set, but smoking is smoking, cope.
can@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
Safer, not safe
Kolanaki@yiffit.net 1 year ago
Safer doesn’t mean perfectly safe.
You could much more easily die from over consumption of alcohol than you could from smoking weed.
RubberElectrons@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Hey cope, thanks for the reply. Consider how we use alcohol to make things like turkey, pork etc tender. Alcohol breaks down fibrous connective tissue, so your bourbon-bbq pulled pork is especially soft and succulent.
Now, consider what happens in your body. A toxic agent reaching all corners of your body, vs an irritating cloud of ash which gets trapped in your alveoli. Neither is good, but evidence strongly suggests that it’s harder to hurt yourself with flower vs booze.
For the record, I partake in both on occasion, but I definitely think alcohol is worse for me, personally. Everybody’s different.
LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.one 1 year ago
Weed is much safer than alcohol, even if you smoke it
player2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 year ago
Check out dry herb vaping, the safest way to “smoke” weed without combustion. Still not perfect but way better in every way.
phoneymouse@lemmy.world 1 year ago
There is new research that marijuana may be bad for your heart.
