Sure, tip the company that just canceled a multiple year project and awarded everyone with a layoff
Former Blizzard president wants to be able to leave a "tip" after completing $70 games: "I wish I could give these folks another $10 or $20"

Sounds like American rich-man-talk.
Tipping is so integral of the American culture that consumers feel obliged to tip even when they dont need to!
RealFknNito@lemmy.world 7 months ago
That used to be what tipping was. Receiving a service so profoundly above average that it warranted an above average expense.
The last “above average” thing Blizzard made was Overwatch and they killed it to sell it twice.
tacosplease@lemmy.world 7 months ago
We don’t even know when you are or aren’t supposed to tip anymore because everyone has a tip jar.
Order groceries online for store pickup. Do I tip the person who brought out the order?
Get a carryout pizza from Domino’s. Do you tip the guy behind the counter that handed you the box?
I hate how often this question must be asked.

I never tip ever, but I’m Australian

Hmm. Maybe a donation to their respective union funds?
Zorque@kbin.social 7 months ago
Ah yes, we must spread tipping culture to all facets of life, clearly.
There are other ways of showing appreciation than throwing money at people. The problem is their livelihood is dependent on that kind of financial gratitude because of the actions of you and your ilk, Mr. Ybarra.

Here’s an idea: convince your rich buddies to give the employees a raise out of the shareholders’ cut.

Your tip is “make another game and I’ll buy it because the last one was good”.
I bought your product and you want me to pay extra because it lived up to what it promised?
You want me to pay someone more for simply doing their job? If you aren’t paying them enough, that they needs tips to survive, that seems like an employer underpaying. If it’s tip or I fuck with your food or chase you down in the street… Then that’s extortion.
“But with proper wages instead of tips the cost goes up.” THE COST IS ALREADY UP BECAUSE OF THE TIP YOU IDIOT, except it isn’t standardised or garunteed.
“But if there is no tips to incentivise people they won’t give good service.” What ever happened to do your job, get paid. Fuck it up and get fired.?
All it does is introduces stress between customer and staff. And causes a sense of entitlement to tips for things that don’t need it at all. Why the fuck is a self-checkour machine asking for a tip!?
A tip should be for EXCEPTIONAL service. Not for the bare minimum.
Tipping culture can get fucked in the ass with a sideways chair.

For an indie game that I bought cheap (maybe even on sale), I do sometimes feel that the price was way too low for the game and I’d appreciate a easy way support the dev/studio a bit further. For AAA $70+ titles? Nope, not gonna happen.
What’s up with this guy? Was he told “f u pay me” too often by his developers, that he took this phrase and found a new meaning for it?
baldingpudenda@lemmy.world 7 months ago
I’ve bought slay the spire, factorio, binding of Issac, etc as gifts to friends as a ty for a great game. Dev gets their cut, friends get a good game. Win, win.

I only read the headline but if this is Bobby Kotick, he’s just an all around piece of shit. He created a work environment so misogynist that multiple former employees described it as being like a frat, and a woman had her breast milk stolen from the employee fridge while the company did nothing.

Video game landlords have arrived.
Kolanaki@yiffit.net 7 months ago
How about giving them a raise, asshole?
taanegl@lemmy.world 7 months ago
Ah yes. In the future you’ll have to pay more than $70, because you need to tip the devs so they can get paid. What’s that? Not happy enough with the game? No pay for the team behind it then. It’s only fair.
steakmeoutt@sh.itjust.works 7 months ago
Everyone : If you want to give them more how about paying them better while the game is in development? Former Blizzard president : No, not like that.
TowardsTheFuture@lemmy.zip 7 months ago
Id happily pirate many games and tip just the devs
fidodo@lemmy.world 7 months ago
No, he wants to put the responsibility of paying his employees onto the consumer. That’s why restaurants want tipping, so they can pay their employees less and push the cost onto the customers.

They can’t pay people fairly because they stole all the profits, is what he’s saying out loud.

Only banning that business model will work.

Fractal bullshit. Every aspect is both awful on its face and viciously dishonest.
To pick one: no fucking way does that money reach anyone responsible for making the game.
Omega_Haxors@lemmy.ml 7 months ago
100% he’s planning on pocketing the tips.

Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz 7 months ago
This idea seems laughable for big AAA games/studios, but I don’t actually hate the idea for smaller indie devs. Especially since some indie games are so dirt cheap.
DarkThoughts@fedia.io 7 months ago
To be fair, some do indeed have some form of donation system.

I buy the soundtrack on Bandcamp if I want to give them more money.

I’m from a non tipping culture country, and it always baffles me when I see the opinion of gratitude in the form of money. Why not write to them to say thanks? Or give a good review? If I tried to give money to someone as a thank you here it would be seen as quite rude.
Drinvictus@discuss.tchncs.de 7 months ago
A bit of an unpopular opinion I’d love a tip option. Especially if I could tip a specific person. Like if I liked the soundtrack maybe I would tip the composer or whatever. Obviously I would require a few rules
- 100% of tips go to the developers or whoever I’m tipping
- Dev pays don’t get cut because of expected tips.
However neither of these will be the case even if they implement something like that.
exocrinous@startrek.website 7 months ago
My country never let tipping culture cross over from America, and we never have to worry about that tipping stuff Americans complain about. When cheap credit card machines were still new, a bunch of businesses used American systems that asked for tips and employees and customers alike completely ignored that screen.

Interesting read. Since he likely knows a lot of these teams, nothing is stopping him emailing them gift cards.

I'm sure they got their year-end bonus of a half-spent $25 starbucks gift card.
